Last Night

My friend Sheryl and her husband Daniel flew in from Seattle last night for a visit. Craig and I decided to give them our room so that we wouldn't have to move Alisa or her stuff (also, she sleeps and plays longer in her crib than in the Pack 'N Play). We slept in the guest bed in Alisa's room.

I went to bed at 1:00 AM but couldn't fall asleep until about 2:30 AM (rare for me). Part of the reason it took me so long to fall asleep is because of Alisa. Shortly after I got into bed, I heard her rustling around. I thought she was just trying to get comfortable again and would soon fall asleep but that was not the case. She woke up, started talking and seemed wide awake. The power had gone out a few hours before so the house was extremely quiet without the A/C running and therefore her talking seemed very loud.

I didn't make any movements because then she would hear them and know someone was in the room (the airbed makes quite a bit of noise when you roll over and stuff because it's tightly tucked into the space between the wall and nightstand so it rubs against them). Anyway, she said a bunch of unrecognizable things but then clearly said "dada". I wondered if she had been dreaming about him.

The power came on 20 minutes later so you could see a little with the light of the nightlight. I thought she'd see that we were in bed so I made sure to lie perfectly still. Craig, on the other hand, started tossing and turning in his sleep. Alisa kept talking off and on and then she said "dada" then "mama" and I knew we were busted because I could tell that she had said it while facing our direction. Craig woke up minutes later and lifted his head to see what was going on with Alisa. When he put his head back down next to mine I very very quietly whispered that Alisa was awake and seemed to know we were there. He said something about how she knew he was there from the time he got into bed (around 12:30 AM) so she must have woken up when he came in. That explains why she said "dada" many times.

I thought she would cry to be with us but it turns out she was just excited to know we were in the room with her. Actually, she probably would have cried if we had talked to her and let her see us for sure but since we didn't respond maybe she had doubts or understood that we were asleep (or trying to be, in my case). She turned on the waterfall soother twice (it stays on for about 20 minutes if the batteries are new) and moved around for awhile. Every time I was just about to drift off the sleep, she'd start talking again and it would wake me. Finally, she stopped talking and I fell asleep for good. Her talking was super cute and I really wish I could have recorded it. Several times I almost laughed at what she was saying (I couldn't understand it, but it sounded so neat).
