Memorial Day Weekend

My friend Courtney invited Alisa and I to her place in Birmingham, AL for another girls' weekend (her husband was out of town). We drove up there on Saturday (5-hour-drive plus stopping time to eat lunch) and Alisa did pretty well. I kept handing her a different toy to play with whenever she dropped the one she had out of reach. She only cried in the last half hour because she was tired again (she'd already had one nap in the car). She ended up falling asleep 10 minutes before we arrived so Courtney and baby Hayden came down from their apartment and sat with us in the car so Alisa could finish her nap.

Alisa has grown and changed a lot since we last saw them less than 2 months ago. Her separation anxiety has lessened quite a bit and she wasn't upset to be alone with Courtney. She enjoyed talking to Hayden and playing with her toys. She also liked going after the 2 cats...though when she got close to them she just pointed at them and talked to them (didn't grab at them or anything). While we were there she practiced walking a lot and spent about half an hour one night just walking from room to room and circling around the couch. She fell down frequently and Hayden laughed every time she saw her fall. It was cute and hilarious.

We relaxed at their place the first evening and Courtney cooked spaghetti. She had just baked sweet potatoes to puree and freeze in cubes for Hayden so we all had some with our spaghetti and I was surprised at how well they went together (helped balance out the spiciness of the spaghetti sauce). The girls played and after they were asleep, Courtney and I watched a movie and ate snacks. Alisa and I slept in Hayden's old room (with Alisa in Hayden's Pack 'N Play). She liked that room because it still had some of Hayden's decorations on the wall.

The next day we went to the Birmingham Zoo for a couple of hours. Alisa got to see monkeys, giraffes, tons of butterflies, etc. and ride the train. She was tired near the end and wasn't excited anymore about the animals. The girls fell asleep in the car so Courtney and I ordered burgers to go from Baumhower's Wings and ate them in the car. We fed the girls lunch after they woke up, did some shopping at The Summit and then got shakes to go from Ben & Jerry's. We watched another movie in the evening and ate some more of our chocolatey snacks.

On our last day there (Memorial Day), we took the girls to the playground, then Old Time Pottery and had lunch from Zaxby's. Alisa and I headed home at 2:00 PM. We made a long stop for dinner and I let Alisa climb around in the car for quite awhile. I had to change her poopie diaper and then we were on our way (just an hour and a half to go). I let her wiggle for so long because I didn't want her to have any reason to cry during the rest of the trip. I knew that if I took care of her all her needs then if she did cry it wouldn't be so gut-wrenching for me and I wouldn't have doubts on what needed to be done. She did end up crying really hard for quite awhile, but I could tell it was just because she was really tired so it didn't bother me as much as it usually does. It just motivated me to hurry home. She had only napped for 40 minutes so far that day. She finally surrendered to sleep about half an hour from home. I put her up in her crib as soon as we got home without putting her in her pajamas because I didn't want to risk waking her up too much where it would be harder for her to fall back asleep.
