Potty Training - Take 2 (Days 1-3)

Sunday was the big potty training day--the day we declared that Alisa would make the switch from diapers to big girl underwear (training pants initially). We got a late start because Alisa slept late. I changed her diaper (which was poopie) when she woke up and I made chocolate chip muffins for breakfast. After breakfast, I showed her the Potty Patty doll and explained that we were going to show Patty how to use the potty. I based the training on the books "Potty Train Your Child in Just One Day" by Teri Crane and "Potty Training in One Day" by Narmin Parpia. The 2nd book came with the Potty Patty doll. I printed 2 free potty charts online for recording potty times and putting reward stickers on.

Here is Alisa training Patty with instructions from me:

First, we took of Patty's diaper, put on her panties and explained that she was a big girl and would no longer pee in diapers but would pee in the potty. Then we took off her dress so we'd be able to see her pee (and so she was in just a t-shirt like Alisa). Alisa gave her water to drink (we had to put a bib on her because the water kept dribbing out of her mouth).

Alisa removed Patty's panties so she could try to pee:

Patty sits on the potty (which will become Alisa's 2nd potty since we have multiple levels to our house):

After Patty peed in the potty (I secretly squeezed her leg so she'd pee), Alisa wiped her bottom with a piece of toilet paper and we put her panties back on.

Patty got a treat for peeing in the potty (but since she couldn't really eat it, Alisa got to eat it for her if she promised to pee on the potty someday):

More water for Patty (and the 3 potty books we have been reading):

Another treat for Patty:

It is afternoon now so Patty is fully trained and Alisa is in her training pants now but she still wanted to give Patty more water:

Alisa reads books while trying to pee on the potty:

Tickle break with Daddy while she wears her new training pants:

Apple juice was the preferred drink of the day:

Trying to decide between a marshmallow and an M&M (usually she knew right away which one she wanted):

Looking at her 1st pee and poop in the potty:

When it was lunch time, the training with Patty was finished. We ate Bagel Bites and fruit for lunch and then it was Alisa's turn to use the potty. I took off her diaper and put on her padded training pants (called them big girl panties) and told Alisa she would wear panties instead of diapers from now on. The training pants are made to hold a little pee but Alisa would feel that she was wet and want to be changed (unlike her diapers that absorbed pee so well that she felt like she was dry).

I had her pull her panties down and sit on the potty. I read several books to her (10 minutes worth) and then had her pull up her panties and go play. She struggles with pulling up her panties at this point because she doesn't have much experience (with shorts, pants or anything). We read more books and she kept giving Patty more water to drink from the bottle she came with. An hour later I had her sit on the potty again while I read books to her. She didn't pee because she wasn't interested in drinking as much juice as she normally does (it figures that on the day I really want her to guzzle the juice, she doesn't--and I wasn't really pushing it on her which might cause her to resist).

Well, 5 minutes later, she said she had to pee so I helped her pull down her panties and sit on the potty. We read books and she peed and pooped on the potty within 10 minutes! I smelled the poop but first just thought she farted since she had already pooped in the morning. Then I got a glimpse of it in the potty but didn't say anything because I didn't want to scare her (she freaks about seeing poop in the bathtub) or prevent her from any more peeing (she said she needed to sit there longer). I was super excited to see it in the potty though because it was a perfect start (I actually got tears in my eyes I was so happy). When she said she was finished, I handed her a wet wipe and asked her to wipe her front while I wiped her backside. She happily wiped herself, much to my relief. She looked at her poop and pee in the potty and wasn't bothered by it (I was afraid she would be concerned by seeing her poop). I was so glad she didn't have an accident before her first successful pee.

After we emptied the potty into the toilet upstairs and washed our hands we called Daddy to tell him the great news (he had just left to go golfing). Then Alisa said she wanted to call Grandmom and Grandad. She hasn't talked to them on the phone in awhile because she would always get shy when I'd call them and put the phone up to her mouth and ear to give her a turn. Well, she was so excited about her pee in the potty that she loudly told Grandmom right away. We chatted for a bit but then Grandmom had to run out the door so we said goodbye and I hung up. Alisa said, "But I need to tell Grandad too!" so I called back and he answered. She happily told him that she peed in the potty. It was too cute.

The first day of potty training was very time consuming. I didn't check email or do anything around the house because I needed to be totally attentive to Alisa. And Alisa didn't get to watch any TV because her distractions needed to be limited while learning. We spent all day reading books and playing with a few toys. Meals were quick and easy. She got to choose a treat from the treat tray for having dry panties (for an hour or more) or for peeing or pooping in the potty. She got to choose a special sticker for peeing or pooping in the potty and she got to choose a sparkly smiley face sticker for every time she sat on the potty for at least 10 minutes and tried to pee. The stickers went on her potty chart along with the times for trying or succeeding and she also got another smiley face sticker (her idea) to put on her hand, leg or wherever (she liked putting them on her bare thighs).

I put her in a pull-up for naptime because she never wakes up dry from a nap. I made sure not to call it a diaper because I told Alisa she is done wearing diapers. After her naptime, I had her pull down her pull-up and throw it in the trash and then pull on her panties. She easily cooperated and even enjoyed it (she's been enjoying throwing her diapers in the trash for weeks now).

She slept from 3:30 to 7 PM and would have slept longer had I not gone into her room to "accidentally" wake her. After her nap, she didn't want to put her training pants back on and really didn't want to sit on the potty. I did get her to agree to training pants and we had macaroni & cheese for dinner around 7:30 PM. She finally drank the rest of the juice in her sippy cup.

Right before I was going to have her sit on the potty I smelled something and thought, "Oh no, I'm too late!" I looked over at her on the couch and noticed the blanket that had been on her legs was on the floor. I asked if her panties were dry and she said, "No, they are wet. Please don't take them! I need to leave them on!" I reminded her what happens when she has an accident (she peed in her panties and a little leaked through onto the couch) and then we did the practice potty runs about 8 times. The runs consisted of us starting in a different place each time and me saying, "Alisa, what if you are playing in the kitchen (wherever we are at the time) and you need to pee?" and she answers, "Run to my potty, pull down my panties and sit on my potty!" Then we'd run to the living room where her potty was and she'd do all that. Then she'd quickly pull her panties back on and we'd run to another place and repeat it all. She liked doing them (some kids hate them) and was getting pretty good at pulling down her panties by herself. I had her leave the wet panties on for the potty runs to remind her why she was doing them (because she peed in her panties and needed to practice rushing to the potty) and how yucky it felt to be wet. I had her sit on the potty for 10 minutes and let her watch a TV show we had TIVO'd. Then it was time to get ready for bed so went upstairs and put on a pull-up and pajamas and washed hands and brushed her teeth.

Day 3 (10-20-09):
(treat choices today were Smarties, tiny Gummy Bears)
pull-up was so full of pee in morning that it leaked a lot on the bed, it was also full of mushy poop
11:20-11:35 sat on potty and read books
1:45-1:55 sat on potty and watched TV
Alisa figured out that I made the doll pee by squeezing her leg so she made the doll pee today.
4:00-6:00 napped in pull-up, full of pee when she woke up
She was a little out of sorts from waking and afraid that her pull-up leaked on her bed as it did this morning. I reassured her that it did not leak and removed her pants and pull-up, threw pull-up in trash and pulled on panties for her.
I really could not get her to sit on the potty to try to pee in the evening (I didn't want it to become a bad experience for her) so I periodically asked her if she needed to pee and if she had dry panties. She never did pee in the potty or have any accidents today. She saved all her peeing for naptime and nighttime, plus she just didn't drink enough today.
I bought nighttime pull-ups that will hold more pee so hopefully we won't have to change the sheets again.
